Called to Serve on Cinco De Mayo

Image
Over two years ago I made a decision. I decided I wanted to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It wasn't something that could be accomplished over night. It took a really long time. There was lots of planning to do but most of all a lot of counseling with God. I wanted to make sure I was going for the right reasons. I wanted to be sure I could do it. I wanted to go at the right time. Finally, this past January, I set a date. May 25th. This was my availability date, or the day that I would be available to be called on a mission. This is when all of the craziness began, all of the paperwork and shots and appointments. It took longer than I expected and I was getting antsy. I just wanted to leave! I knew I was making the right decision and I wanted nothing more than to put on the black name tag and serve God for 18 months. Once all the paperwork was completed it was sent to Salt Lake City to church headquarters. Sometime during the next few weeks, by ...

Life after college Part 2 - This is not goodbye...

Image
So, this is somewhat of a continuation of the last post, this one has some real pictures. First, is the last picture I took with my amazing roommates Kelsey, Holly and Lauren. I love these girls. We had an amazing year with McDonalds and Glee and He's Just Not That Into You and boys and all of our silliness. Now we are all off living life to the fullest in different parts of the world. I'm sure one day we will all get back together for one more night of craziness. Next is just a picture of me graduating from college. I was so excited! It was one of the best days of my life. Graduating from high school is exciting, but mostly because you're happy to be done with it since you HAD to go to high school. I paid thousands of dollars, moved away from my family and friends, stayed up until midnight reading, trudged around in the snow all by choice. It was hard. There were plenty of times when I wanted to give up. But I didn't. And I finally made it to that glorious day when I c...

Life After College...for now

Image
Life after college. This is what an ordinary day consists of: -Wake up -Breakfast -Scripture Study -The Gym -Shower -Reading -Nap -waste time in some unproductive way -Movie -Bed It is pretty routine and probably looks super boring. But every once in a while mom and I go out to eat. Sunday there's church, Monday nights FHE, Thursday nights CFYA (center for young adults at church. We play games and sports and have food and a fireside. pretty fun) and sometimes we go see a movie and sometimes I wander around WalMart and sometimes I loose my mind to boredom but I do what I can. My schedule will change a little bit pretty soon. Within the next few days I will receive my mission call. Once I know when I go into the MTC (missionary training center) than I will know whether I a) have 3 or more months of this lying around or b) have one or two months to get in shape, buy all my clothes and luggage, and buy a plane ticket back to good ol' Utah. So life isn't that bad. I...

Imma Toys "R" Us Kid and I don't wanna growup

Do you remember that song? Do you remember driving to Toys "R" Us and buying barbie dolls and tonka trucks to add to your already huge collection? Do you remember sitting in the 10 inch deep kiddie pool in your front yard? Do you remember watching Nickelodeon in the morning while eating your Captain Crunch before your mom dropped you off at school? I do. Like it was yesterday. And now, tomorrow, I graduate from college. I'm only 22 years old but I feel like I have lived forever. When someone asks me about my greatest memories I get so excited I don't know where to start. I have so many good memories and bad memories that I never want to forget and I can't believe that people can still tell me that my life is just beginning. This post could be really long and nostalgic but I'll try to keep it short and sweet. Right now, I've been really thinking about the whole "unknown" thing. I really feel like I'm stepping into the unknown but I'm not n...

I wish I were a little bit taller...

The subject of this post is in reference to the fact that it has been brought to my attention a record number of times this past week that: "Mary, you're really small." Yes, I am, thanks for the notice. Would you like the statistics? Well, here they are: SHOE SIZE: Anywhere from 5 1/2 to 6 1/2. HEIGHT: 5'3 WEIGHT: between 100 and 130 lbs., that's all you need to know. AGE: 21 years and 1o months MOST FREQUENTLY GUESSED AGE: (if they know I'm in college) 20 or (if they don't know) 16 There ya go. Yes, I am a small person. No one needs to remind me since I am quite aware of the fact considering I can't reach the top shelf of my closet, I can't screw in a light bulb, even on a chair unless on my tiptoes and I have to look UP at people. But my grandpa always said, "Dynamite comes in small packages." =) Moving on. I am 55 days away from college graduation. Just thought you all should know.

Jane Austen. Walt Disney. Practically the same person...sorta...

I am terribly disappointed in myself. I told myself I would write once a week or month or something like that. Well...5...months...later. Oops. But this is a fun post that I am so excited about so that makes up for it all. As I was sitting in my kitchen, using my laptop to keep the napkins from blowing off the table to the extreme force of our heater/air conditioner, I pondered how to spice up my research paper on Jane Austen. Even though my teachers usually ask me cut this part out, I cannot help putting a little personality in my papers. If they are boring and dull and stuffy, I fall asleep writing them. Anywho, I was thinking about how dramatically Elizabeth tells Mr. Darcy she won't marry him after his heartfelt proposal. He just walks away I think after a short discussion but I think he should have said something sassy (not that British men have any sass). While coming up with something for him to say these words entered my mind: "If she doesn't eat with (ch...

Termites and Midnights and Night Lights

Hi! It has been too long. I've been...well I could say busy but I'd be lying. Actually I've been lazy and boring and that means watching lots of episodes of F R I E N D S , eating mac and cheese for breakfast, and taking naps in the sun . No one wants to hear about that. But I did do some fun things =) 1) B I O L O G Y I decided to take Biology this summer. Now, for those who don't know, Math and Science are the names of those two little demons in Disney's Hercules movie...at least in my mind. So Biology is my LAST general core class at BYU. Most people take it their 1st semester of college and I'm taking it my senior year. I've been dreading it. Well, so far it has been surprisingly enjoyable. We read a book called Voo doo Sci ence (I know, I know) and it was really cool. Now we are reading a book about decisions and it has guys blowing up missiles and fire figh ters in action. It rocks! Don't worry, it gets better. Today we played with TERMITES ...
