Inauguration Day !
Dear Blog reader,
As most of you know I don't share my political opinions with anyone not even my own father. But, because it is such a wonderful day I thought I would make a quick political comment. If you think you'll be able to decipher from this what "side" I am on, I promise you that you are wrong because I am not a republican nor a democrat. I'm a fence sitter. With that being said, let's continue.
Please excuse the wax figure of Barack Obama featured in this post but it's the only picture of him I had! My trips to the white house are few.
Today was the first time I have ever sat down and watched a president be sweared in. To be bluntly honest it's because I never cared before. As a teenager politics were like the plague: something to be avoided. But now that I'm older and wiser too, I am interested. It's a lot more interesting than I thought. Not to mention, I've learned how much it affects me. Being in another country, I've realized how much I take America for granted. All the time! I take for granted having a president not a queen, having a say not just a voice, having a vote not just a royal bloodline.
Okay, so we've established that I'm proud to be an American.
I think, no matter who you voted for, you need o support the current president. McCain and Obama fans alike need to back up Barack because he won. Besides, Obama said he is willing to accept advice from McCain so we sort of get both of them...not really but it was worth a shot.
One other thing I wante to say; I don't talk about it a lot becuase there is no need to, but I want to address the issue too many people seem to dwell on. He IS our first African American president. It bugged me how many times they mentioned that on the news tonight. We get it! That shouldn't be the only reason people remember him. we should be caring about his opinions on The Issues. But, his race is still important. My parents and grandparents grew up in a time when schools were segregated and now I live in a day when there is a black president. It means a lot about our country. we've grown through our struggles, faults and disagreements and grown together as a people. We've really applied the first word of our name as a country: United. For me and hopefully many other Americans, that's a big accomplishment and I think we should give ourselves a pat on the back.
We're starting a new year, with a new president and I hope, a new attitude. Thanks for listening to me babble on. =)
